Göcek: The Sailing Paradise of the Twelve Islands
From a small village at the end of the bay to Turkey’s most elegant yachting town – discover Göcek’s story, its protected islands, its restaurants and its relaxed way of life.
Tucked into the northern corner of the Gulf of Fethiye, Göcek is a small town with a big reputation. Pine-covered hills roll down to the water, a string of marinas fills the bay with sailing yachts and gulets, and a short sail away lie the Twelve Islands – a maze of coves, islets and turquoise anchorages that many sailors consider the most beautiful cruising ground in Turkey.

A Coast Steeped in Legend
The Göcek area was part of ancient Lycia, and the coast is dotted with traces of the past: Lycian tombs, Byzantine chapels and the ruins of ancient harbours. In one bay, the sunken remains of a Roman bath are known locally as Cleopatra’s Bath, and legends say the famous queen once swam here. On Gemiler Island, close to Ölüdeniz, you can walk among the ruins of Byzantine churches linked to St Nicholas.
From Village to Yachting Town
For most of its history Göcek was a quiet village. Its transformation began in the second half of the 20th century, when yachtsmen discovered its sheltered bay and the nearby airport at Dalaman opened the region to international visitors. In 1988 the coast between Fethiye and Göcek was declared a Special Environmental Protection Area, helping to preserve its forests and bays. Today Göcek has several modern marinas, yet it has kept the feel of a small, green, walkable town.

Life, People and Food
Göcek’s pace of life is gentle. In the morning sailors stock up at the bakeries and markets; in the evening families stroll along the waterfront promenade. Many locals work with the sea – as captains, crew, boat builders and restaurant owners – and the town has a warm, friendly community.
- ✓Göcek waterfront – fish restaurants, cafés and wine bars along the promenade.
- ✓Bay restaurants – floating jetties and family-run restaurants in the coves of the Twelve Islands, many reached only by sea.
- ✓Village markets – fresh fruit, honey, olive oil and local cheese for the galley.

The Twelve Islands by Gulet
Göcek’s great treasure is its cruising ground. Within a few miles you can anchor at Yassıca Islands, Tersane Island, Bedri Rahmi Bay, Sarsala and Boynuz Bükü, then continue to Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley or east towards Kaş and Kekova.
